16th Korea Queer Film Festival
The Korea Queer Film Festival, which supports and celebrates the LGBT community, is a major part of the Queer Culture Festival. Touted as the oldest queer film festival in Korea, you’ll be able to catch some rare films on life, love, and culture.
KQFF was founded with the Korea Queer Culture Festival (KQCF) which has been held since 2001. The Korea Queer Culture Festival has played an important role as a festival for LGBT in South Korea, where the general awareness of LGBT remains low. Together with KQCF, KQFF has striven to offer the general a recognition of diversity based on sexual preferences through screening various LGBT films in the world.
The Korea Queer Film Festival (Korean: 퀴어영화제), was established in the year 2001. It is reputedly the oldest gay and lesbian film festival in Korea, and originally part of the Korea Queer Culture Festival. It aims to screen rare modern and older films on a wide range of LGBT topics.
The Festival aims to support and celebrate the LGBT community, to contribute to the development of LGBT films, to build a network among domestic and international filmmakers, establish cultural diversity and to be actively involved in cultural activism for LGBT rights.
The parade was banned in 2015. This has attracted international attention to the event, with most of it being critical of the progress made regarding LGBT rights in South Korea. Human Rights Watch has expressed concern in a public letter to the President of Korea.
Those who say there’s never a sequel to top the original have yet to experience the Korea Queer Culture Festival. Each year the festival grows in number and becomes hotter and hotter in the media. There was an especially high spike in numbers last year.
This year’s festival starts with the slogan “Love and Resist, Queer Revolution!” with an opening ceremony that’s scheduled to take place on June 9 with a parade following on June 13.
With its popping colors, noises and stories, the 2014 Queer Festival was a huge success. Headlining newspapers and ranking high on hot stories’ lists, it was definitely one of the most talked about events of last summer. Festival organizers looking to match that are working day and night to prepare for another success. Even funding for the festival happened quickly and efficiently, thanks to their help.

Despite strong opposition from some members of the conservative Christian community, the 2015 Korea Queer Festival will host its opening ceremony at Seoul Plaza. Those in the know understand, of course, that the festival’s real highlight begins after the parade ends: at the after party in Jongtaewon, and at the Queer Film Festival shortly thereafter. All you need to do to join is show up and cheer on! As we all know, love conquers hate and at this year’s festival, we hope there’s even more love than there was before.
